The house
A machiya of the late Edo period, restored over eleven years by a family of carpenters who kept the original joinery and replaced nothing that could be repaired. Seventeen rooms, each opening onto a courtyard rather than a corridor.
The moss garden is the reason people come and the reason the house stays quiet. It is closed to all but residents, and at first light it is closed to all but one party at a time.
Meals are taken in the room. The kaiseki counter downstairs seats eight and is arranged, when we ask, for guests of the house.
